Sometimes, the experiences that stay with us the longest are the ones we never expected. For me, that experience involved Sonny, a rescue dog in Dubai, and a day that turned into something far more memorable than I had anticipated.
In this episode of The Dubai Diaries, I visit Doggy Doggy on the outskirts of Dubai to take part in a fostering day and learn more about the people and animals at the heart of rescue work in the UAE.
Meeting Sonny and Discovering Dog Fostering in Dubai
I had always wanted to foster a rescue dog, so the opportunity to spend time with Sonny was something I was looking forward to.
Fostering gives dogs a chance to experience care, attention and a temporary home while they wait to find their forever family. It can also help prospective owners understand a dog’s personality and needs before making a long-term commitment.
Like anywhere else in the world, dogs in Dubai need rehoming for a variety of reasons. Behind every animal is a different story, and finding the right home takes time, patience and dedication.
My plan with Sonny was relatively simple: I was travelling and intended to take him back for a week. What followed, however, was a series of unexpected events that made the experience much more significant than I had imagined.
The People Behind Animal Rescue
One of the most important parts of the experience was seeing the work that goes on behind the scenes.
Rescue dogs need more than food and shelter. They need patience, reassurance and people willing to invest their time in helping them feel safe. The carers who look after these animals play an essential role in preparing them for their next chapter.
Their commitment can make a real difference to a dog’s wellbeing while it waits for a permanent home.
Visiting Doggy Doggy offered an insight into that work and the compassion involved in caring for animals that need a second chance.
Why Fostering Matters
Fostering can be a rewarding way to support animal welfare, particularly for people who want to help but may not be ready to adopt permanently.
It provides an opportunity to give a dog individual attention and experience life outside a rescue environment. Just as importantly, it helps raise awareness of the animals still waiting for someone to give them a home.
Sonny’s story is a reminder that even a short experience can have a lasting impact. Sometimes, what begins as a practical arrangement becomes something much more personal.
